A yellowish-orange glow fills the gaps between pine trees as the sun lowers over Timber Ridge. The isolated patch of woods where Cole's been hiding with Aponi and Wapun has gotten a bit more crowded. These traffickers will stop at nothing, including hurting Cole's family to get to him.

From Wapun's burner, Cole called his brother about the predicament. Jay drove up here with his wife, daughter, and Powaw, picking up a few extra tents and pre-paid phones, plus more food and water, on the way.

Cole's new burner rings. His heart rate picks up. After a couple hours, Lacey is returning his call. He answers. "Hey."

"Hi."

Hearing her voice feels good. But the feeling is overshadowed. He's about to tell her something that's going to make their relationship problems even worse.

"I got your voicemail," she says. "I appreciate that you want to talk with me, but I'm just not ready yet. It's only been a few days."

"Yeah, I know. I actually wasn't calling about that. About us. I need to talk with you about something else." He rubs his forehead. "You may be in danger. Declan too."

She doesn't respond.

"Lacey?" he asks.

"What do my son and I do now?" In her voice is both urgency and disappointment.

"Get him and meet me in the woods. We have a tent for you guys. You'll only need to spend one night here. It'll all be over by tomorrow. If you never want to see me again after that, I'd understand."

"God. Text me the address."

"Your messages may get read by a…third party. I don't want to send you the latitude-longitude over text. I'll tell it to you. Just write it down, if you don't mind."

He tells her the coordinates. She ends the call without saying bye. He sits on a rock and stares at a stream. In his head, he revisits his first date with her.

They went to a nice Italian restaurant and split a pizza, branzino, and piece of chocolate cake. She was so excited to be there with him, she couldn't help but giggle all night, even at things that weren't funny, like when the waiter asked if they wanted another bottle of sparkling water.

He remains on the rock for over an hour, thinking about her, until he hears her Volkswagen pull up. Jay greets her and Declan, taking their overnight bag.

She notices Cole. He hopes she at least gives him a small wave. She doesn't. She looks away and hugs Powaw.

Not seeing her for a while made Cole realize how much he wants to marry her. He doesn't want a future without her. Though he had reservations about proposing to her, he'd been too critical. He is a difficult person to understand. He is a White man who lives according to ancient Native American credos, leading him to take on many enemies in dangerous, unconventional ways.

He couldn't expect Lacey to understand all of that, and all of him. He should have just accepted her. But now, he may have lost the chance.

He waves over his brother and asks, "You'll keep an eye on everyone while I'm gone?"

"I got you, little bro.
